“We’d be stupid to think we can tackle AI by ourselves. Purposeful collaboration is how creatives will tackle AI in the next generation to come”.
- Emily Tedder, Founder
The creative industry needs to be kept alive through people, connections and collaboration.
Creative industries have always worked best together. Sharing ideas, using each other’s skillset to create and innovate. AI has changed that landscape, where a lot of the heavy lifting can be removed, and therefore can isolate creatives out of a job, and out of a community.
Enter Sixth Space.
WHAT IS SIXTH SPACE?
We are a curated events space supporting creatives, bringing back human connection through community. Where creatives can come together and share ideas, create discussions and build a network.
Sixth Space is what it means to be part of a collective, bringing together the six forms of creativity:
Food, music, art, dance, fashion & photography
Six expressions of creativity, one community.
HAVE WE FORGOTTEN HOW TO BE HUMAN?
A short history on connection and community
Food is an integral part of any culture, and is widely known to bring any community together. Globally, humans consume an estimated two trillion plus kilograms of food annually. But it’s much more than that. It’s a symbol of hospitality, love, friendship and celebration. Food is a platform to share your cultural heritage and bring social cohesion, having the power to break down social barriers, promoting cross-cultural understanding and an inclusive society. The universal language of food reminds us of our shared humanity.
Music is as old as humanity itself with the earliest musical instruments dating back 40,000 years. It is as integral to communication as it is to conveying emotion. It has a capacity to unite people across cultures and generations. Each culture has its own style, each generation creates music differently, and these influences often mix together to form new ideas and new communities.
Art is one of the most powerful ways cultures express their identity, values and traditions. According to a new report by British Future, 72% of people think that events to do with art can aid integrating people from diverse backgrounds. It blends this diversity into unity, by going beyond language or cultural barriers, in the form of visual expression. Public art and community-led initiatives bring people together, an example being the murals on the Berlin wall. Notably, the most famous mural: ‘My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love’ by Dmitri Vrubel in 1990, shows Leonid Brezhnev (the leader of the Soviet Union) and Erich Honecker (the leader of the German Democratic Republic), greeting each other with a socialist fraternal kiss. Today, this has been the symbol of the reunification of Germany after the fall of the Berlin wall, a widely celebrated national holiday.

Dance also transcends linguistic and cultural barriers, with the ability to tell stories and convey emotions solely through movement. Similar to music, dancing began as a form of ritual, linked to religious ceremonies, or celebrations. Dance serves as a powerful reflection of cultural identity, such as the merengue, the national dance of the Dominican Republic. It draws influence from European and Afro-Cuban styles, representing the cultural diversity of the Dominican population. In 2016, it was inscribed onto the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO.

Fashion has come a long way since its humble beginnings. The roots of contemporary fashion lie within ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, opting for sleek linen clothes with opulence at every turn. Since then, we’ve transitioned through the Renaissance era to modern day, always seeking a way to express ourselves through our style. One of the first recorded clothing collaborations was between surrealist artist Salvador Dali and designer Elsa Schiaparelli in 1937, producing iconic pieces such as the Lobster dress. Since then, collaboration and creativity have been at the heart of fashion.

Photography is another visual art form that can unite people. Street photographers find the beauty in ordinary moments of daily life; wedding photographers capture the happiest day of our lives; whilst photojournalists tell stories of humanitarian crises without needing words. People want to have their story told, and as the old saying goes: “a picture is worth a thousand words” - coined by Arthur Brisbane.
